Posted

Jenna Szwejkowski of East Meadow was inducted into the University of Maryland’s chapter of The National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS) on Sept. 13. Szwejkowski, a sophomore majoring in psychology, was invited to join NSCS because she was part of the top 20 percent of students in the University of Maryland’s freshman class. The National Society of Collegiate Scholars is the premier interdisciplinary honor society for high-achieving freshmen and sophomores at 240 universities across the United States.

High merit
Sacred Heart Academy’s Amanda Brown and Holy Trinity Diocesan High School’s Courtney O’Connell, both East Meadow residents, have been named Commended Student in the 2010 National Merit Scholarship Program. Amanda and Courtney are part of a select group of high school students throughout the United States to be recognized as a commended student, placing among the top 5 percent of the over 1.5 million students who took the PSAT in the fall of 2008.

A family summer project

McVey’s Harmony pond is an ecological environment that provides the opportunity for outdoor study and exploration. During the summer months, 11 McVey families volunteered to take care of the pond, and conduct simple science experiments, journal entries and drawings.

The families donated fish, tadpoles, bird seed and bird feeders, as well as, animal decorations to enhance the pond area.
