On Wednesday night into Thursday morning, East Meadow, Salisbury and surrounding communities experienced what some forecasters called a “thundersnow.”
That is because thunder could be heard in parts of the Town of Hempstead as snowflakes began to fall once again at around 8 p.m. It was the day’s second round of snow, as the Wednesday morning commute was hampered by snowfall, followed by a wintry mix throughout the day into the evening.
When all was said and done, East Meadow residents woke up with about 15 inches of snow on the ground.
Library closed
Because of the snow, the East Meadow Public Library is closed on Thursday. It is expected to be open on Friday, with regular hours.
Jail visits canceled
The Nassau County Correctional Center canceled all visitation hours on Thursday because of the inclement weather.
County hotline activated
Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano activated the non-emergency hotline during the snowstorm. Residents can call (888) 684-4274 for assistance with any snow-related situation that is not life-threatening or an emergency. Examples include downed trees or plowing issues.
If any Nassau resident is in need of shelter, call the Nassau County Warm Bed Hotline at 1-866-WARM-BED.
Town of Hempstead declares snow emergency
Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray announced that she has declared a snow emergency in response to potentially dangerous conditions associated with a major winter snowstorm.
"Our town is continuing its proactive practice of having deployed salt spreaders on the road at the first sign of snow,” said Murray. "More than 225 pieces of equipment are utilized in the salt spreading and road plowing operation."
Murray requested residents to remove cars from local roadways to clear paths for plows.
