Appraisers Road Show coming to Temple Emanu-El

Posted

Temple Emanu-El leaders are inviting the community to the synagogue on Sunday for day of antique and art discovery.

Temple Emanu-El, located at 123 Merrick Ave. in East Meadow, will host collectible experts from the Appraisers Road Show on Dec. 13. From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., community members may have their heirlooms and unique items verbally analyzed. They will be given an auction estimate.

A $5 fee per item fee will be charged for each of the first five collectibles a community member brings to be examined. After the first five, there is no extra charge. Funds will benefit the temple.

The Appraisers Road Show is a collective of independent art, antique and collectibles experts in the northeastern part of the United States. The group has assembled at various public appraisal events since their first show at the Fulton County Museum in upstate New York in 2011.

A number of important antique finds were made at past events, including a $1 million Chinese Imperial Zitan chair, a Gustav Stickley corner cupboard and a group of Japanese Surimono prints. In addition to these treasures, surprises have been found at all price levels, often to the delight of the owners.

The Temple Emanu-El event will be the 20th road show held in New York in four years, and the first of its kind in East Meadow. Nine specialized experts will be available to talk with community members directly. Locals may bring their objects to the temple; if they have a large group of items, team members may be contacted for on-site visits.

The organization said the nine visitors are experts in Americana documents and maps, jewelry, silver, furniture, stamps, coins, toys, military relics, books, sports memorabilia, Chinese and Japanese objects and ceramics, rugs, tapestries, prints, posters, paintings, drawings, sculpture, photography and other collectibles. Community members do not need appointments to speak with them.

Additionally, Walter Bazar, — an expert in 19th and 20th century painting, — will give a presentation on buying, selling and appraising fine art. Colin Fraser, the former head of Christie’s stamp department, will also host a discussion on stamps. Both talks are scheduled to being at 1 p.m.
