Around the world in one day at McVey

Posted

ESL (English as a Second Language) students at McVey Elementary School took their very first “trip around the world” in November.

They had the opportunity to present their classroom work to their parents, which included poems entitled “I Am Special” and their colorfully created “All About Me” posters and books. The program offered a way for parents to connect with their children’s learning.

Families prepared and contributed a special traditional meal that represented their country of origin, and each student was given a “passport” that enabled them to travel around the world while sampling culinary delights from various countries. The students’ passports were stamped at each country they arrived in.

Some of the countries represented were the United States, Ecuador, El Salvador, Jordan, Turkey, Honduras, Portugal, Argentina, India, Pakistan, China, Colombia, Macedonia, and Poland; and foods included baklava, plantains, hummus, chicken, empanadas, pupusas, breads, and desserts.

When the students were finished with their trip around the world, ESL teachers Carrie Gellman-Trigg and Jessica Klide gave the parents an overview of the ESL program along with tips on how they can help their children succeed throughout the school year.
