Art with a purpose at Woodland Middle School

Students dedicate mural to Nassau County Firefighters Museum

Dr. John Healy’s students at Woodland Middle School go beyond simply drawing and painting — they learn about the world.

The program, named “Learning About The World Through Art,” emphasizes self-expression.

“That message may be yours, it may be somebody else’s, or it may be shared by both,” Healy said.

Last Friday, students presented their latest project — a mural they dedicated to the Francis X. Pendl Nassau County Firefighters Museum and Education Center in East Garden City.

The mural acted as both a theme and a memorial. As a theme, the students depicted the image of a firefighter walking with two children. The message was intended to show children not to fear firefighters, but instead to embrace them when they are there to help them in times of need.

As a memorial, the mural included an image of Healy’s cousin, Capt. Terrence Hatton of FDNY Rescue Co. 1, who was killed on Sept. 11. The children also included images of relatives who served as firefighters.

“All year, they create individual works of art,” Healy said. “But this time, maybe once or twice a year, they all get together and share a theme and make more contributions.”

The illustration was created using acrylic paint.

It is now displayed at the museum to greet visitors. The Nassau County Firefighters Museum is inside the Cradle of Aviation, located at One Davis Avenue in East Garden City.
