Board Vice President honored by state

Alisa Baroukh, the vice president of the East Meadow School District Board of Education, earned praise from the New York State School Boards Association when she earned its coveted Level 2 Board Excellence Award.

The Level 2 Achievement is earned by those who accumulate points for participating in NYSSBA training activities, such as the board officers academy, state-mandated training, legal conferences or custom board retreats.

Baroukh was recognized for the achievement at the Sept. 25 board meeting. She was born and raised in East Meadow, and still lives in the community. After earning a degree in geography from Hofstra University, she returned as an adjunct professor. A corporate accountant for the past 16 years, she has ensured tax dollars would be spent wisely when she first joined the board as a trustee in 2017.

Outside of the Board of Education, Baroukh has a strong following in the district’s Parent Teacher Associations, especially the Barnum Woods Elementary School PTA, where she served on the executive board as treasurer. During her tenure, she was one of three parents selected to revamp the district’s elementary-level report cards, making it easier for parents to understand their children’s scores.
