Bowling Green gives back to the community

Posted

Bowling Green Elementary School students and faculty donated 800 pounds of food to needy families in the community this Thanksgiving.

From Nov. 2 through 19, Bowling Green Kiwanis Club members collected non-perishable food items from each classroom in the school. After the food drive ended, East Meadow School District officials said students filled boxes with canned goods, stuffing, pasta, rice, gravy and cereal for families in the area to enjoy on the holiday.

The Bowling Green students’ efforts were a part of the greater East Meadow Kiwanis Club’s holiday food basket initiative. More than 130 families received food thanks to members of the service organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for children and families. Seven youth service leadership organizations, Kiwanis New York District Governor-elect Stephen A. Sirgiovanni, Best Market and members of the World Gym also supported the cause.

Kiwanis Club volunteers kicked off the Thanksgiving charitable campaign by hosting food drives at Shop Rite and Stop and Shop on Nov. 14 and 15. Students from schools across the district volunteered.

Kiwanians assembled meal baskets with the donations on Nov. 20 and delivered them to needy families the next day. Local religious leaders and social workers identified prospective recipients, in addition to alerting them about when to expect the delivery.
