Brian Berger earns Eagle Scout rank

East Meadow Boy Scout recognized for project

Brian Berger, an East Meadow High School senior, has earned the distinction of Eagle Scout, the highest rank given out by Boy Scouts of America.

Berger, a member of Troop No. 362, approached Father Ralph Sommer of St. Brigid's R.C. Church in Westbury and inquired about helping his parish.

The scout led a team that revitalized the landscape in front of two buildings owned by St. Brigid's, across the street from the church on Post Avenue. He was assisted by several troop members and leaders.

Berger's group worked two Saturdays in October. The volunteers installed plants and soil in front of both buildings, painted and repaired the doors and rails, removed the shrubs and trimmed a tree.

"I was definitely nervous," Berger said. "I never led a group before this. It's hard to be a leader, but it's easier when you are dealing with honest people who want to be there."

Before taking on the physical work, Berger reached out to the community for assistance. In addition to asking for donations and holding a fundraiser, Berger had to work with the Village of Westbury to coordinate rubbish removal. Peter Cipriano, owner of Cipriano's Nursery in East Meadow, donated soil and plants and offered his gardening expertise. Berger's group even had to partake in a discussion on how to properly use the tools for the project.

Berger will attend Nassau Community College in the fall. He plans to join a branch  of the military with the goal of moving up the ranks to become an officer.
