Board reschedules Communications Meeting

The East Meadow Board of Education has rescheduled the first public Communications Meeting of the school year, which was to take place on Sept. 24. Because of an conflicting event that requires the presence of some board members and administrators, the Communications meeting has been rescheduled for Oct. 1 at 8 p.m in the Leon J. Campo Salisbury Center, 718 The Plain Road, Salisbury. An academic presentation will precede the meeting at 7:30 p.m.
Audience members are invited to address the board.

Flu update

Superintendent Louis DeAngelo sent an open letter to families that provides an update on measures the district is taking to address what is anticipated to be a national rise in cases of influenza and the H1N1 virus, also known as the swine flu.
In the letter, DeAngelo reminded families of the extensive cleaning and sanitation program that the district already has in place. In addition to that program, the district is installing hands-free soap dispensers and self-feeding paper towel dispensers in all rest rooms. Also, there will be hands-free waterless dispensers installed in computer and music rooms, he said.

Presidential address

East Meadow students may have a chance to see President Barack Obama’s widely publicized back to school address — on tape delay.
According to DeAngelo, “logistics” on the first day of school made it difficult to show the speech live to students, which ran at noon on Sept. 8.
Schools were directed to tape the speech, so teachers could choose to incorporate it into future lessons if they wish.

Crafting a new slogan for E. Meadow

The Herald, along with the East Meadow School District and the Town of Hempstead, have asked elementary schools to come up with a catchy and appropriate phrase that captures the identity of East Meadow.

After reviewing dozens of entries that were submitted in June, a team of Herald editors will select finalists.

The final decision then rests with you … the readers.
