Compromise, for a change

Well, I’m happy to report that not only did the Republican Party have another good week, but for once, President Obama prevailed and was also victorious. After suffering several setbacks, the president managed to successfully broker a compromise bill with Republicans to extend the Bush-era tax cuts, which were due to expire on Jan. 1.

Last Wednesday, the Senate overwhelmingly passed the $858 billion compromise tax package by a vote of 81-19. The next night, the identical bill passed the House by a vote of 277 to 148. It became law on Friday.

With the deadline fast approaching, Obama praised Congress for its quick action, saying, “Middle-class families no longer need to worry about a New Year’s Day tax hike.”

Can you believe it? The president has emerged as the tax champion for middle-class Americans! The ineffectual liberals, who attacked him for supporting a tax break initiative, look just plain stupid.

In an effort to promote bipartisanship, and after realizing that it was in the best interests of the country to come up with a compromise bill, Obama extended an offer to Republican leaders and worked steadily until a compromise was reached.

The result? Signed legislation and an elated middle class.

The sore losers? Liberal Democrats who felt that the president didn’t do enough to exclude the most controversial portion of the bill, the provision that allowed the so-called wealthy to receive a two-year tax break extension.

Boohoo. By compromising, Obama put an end to the class warfare that has been encumbering our nation’s fiscal growth. Why should success in America be penalized? Extending tax rates at the present level is the best way to generate more capital and job growth. In advocating for higher taxes, we only stifle spending and job creation.

The liberals continue to bash the bill. Unfortunately, they failed to realize that it wasn’t the wealthy driving up the national debt — it was their tax-and-spend agenda. The middle class shouldn’t be victimized because liberals choose to govern with impunity, addicted to more spending and more taxes.
