There is a well-hidden secret tucked away in Lynbrook, and with winter on its way, it’s a true find. Also affiliated with Upper Crust Foods, Joey’s Pizza is far from your typical pizzeria.

While its pizza happens to be phenomenal (Remember those cheesy, saucy slices you adored in Brooklyn or Queens?), the bulk of their offerings are freshly made, quickly frozen, Italian meals. And, the prices are truly from an era gone by.
Chef/owner Joey credits his cooking to what he learned from mom, and to growing up in an Italian household in Brooklyn. His 27 years of experience include ownership of pizzerias in Brooklyn and Long Island’s South Shore. Lynbrook has been the home of Joey’s Pizza for the last eight.

Joey’s frozen meals weigh at least a pound each, and are sold in plastic microwavable containers. More than 20 choices are available, and they always have at least 500 in stock. Each meal is $5, or four for $20, or 10 for $40. We took home several varieties to try, heated them as per instruction, and were amazed at the quality and freshness.

Both the shrimp and the chicken parmigiana over penne were cooked to perfection, brought together in a hearty red sauce. Meatballs were right on target, as was the luscious lasagna. Baked clams were sensational; we used Focaccia bread to soak up the juices.

There are endless reasons to have these in your freezer, and so many different types of people can benefit. These are great for the elderly, college students, those who live alone, those who would like to bring a hot lunch to work, empty nesters, or even busy parents.

Add a salad, or a loaf of Joey’s outstanding Focaccia bread ($1), and you can have a restaurant quality meal in about eight minutes. They also sell frozen party trays for $35 each, or four for $100. Side dishes, such as sautéed spinach or broccoli, or baked clams, are $15 per tray. As for pizza, if you pick it up, a large pie is only $7.50.

Joey’s sells wholesale as well. Don’t be surprised if you see their fare sold in delis or served at restaurants. Catering is another facet. For $6.99 per person (minimum 25 people), you will get five different trays (and a free one for every 25 people) for a buffet setup. This includes plates, forks, knives, napkins, sterno, racks, bread, and grated cheese.

Hours are Tuesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Pizza delivery is available within a 1.5-mile radius. Frozen dinner delivery is offered throughout Nassau County and parts of Brooklyn. According to Joey, no sugar is used in the sauce or dough, and they only use “real cheese.” Monday is their day of rest.
