Budget season begins

The countdown has begun. Eighteen weeks remain until East Meadow School District voters go to the polls to decide on the school budget and Board of Education races.

The district released a budget timeline at the school board’s Communications meeting on Dec. 16. According to the timeline, the administrative budget was due to Superintendent Louis DeAngelo on Wednesday. After about three weeks of review and finalization, the superintendent presents his proposed budget to the Board of Education, on Jan. 28.

The district hosts a public budget input session on March 3, which invites members of the community to comment. The school board completes its review of the preliminary budget on March 10, and then adopts a final proposal on April 7. After about a month or so of presentations to community and school organizations, the district also does a formal budget presentation to the community on May 5.

Then comes the Budget Vote, on May 17.

Drive safely

With the start of the winter season, the school district reminds residents to be aware that inclement weather could make driving hazardous. Drive safely and stop for all school buses as children get on and off the bus. Keep in mind that the Nassau County Police Department is paying special attention to illegal parking at the schools. If your vehicle is illegally parked, you may get a ticket.

Giving back

The Meadowbrook Student Council recently collected more than 150 pounds of food for Island Harvest in time for the holiday season. The students also made blankets and scarves to help keep senior citizens warm during the winter.
