East Meadow Library: A glimpse at the life of Charles Dickens

Posted

Last week, East Meadow Public Library patrons were immersed in the world, life and tales of Charles Dickens — the English novelist who created some of today’s best-known works and fictional characters throughout his lifetime.

His novels and stories, such as “A Christmas Carol,” “Oliver Twist,” “Great Expectations and “A Tale of Two Cities,” continue to inspire people, and adaptations have been made in a variety of artistic genres. Dickens’ works received unprecedented popularity during his lifetime, and are still widely read and enjoyed today.

And who can better bring Dickens to life on stage than his own great-great grandson?

Gerald Dickens, a gifted actor, brought the show “Mr. Dickens is Coming!” to the East Meadow library on Sept. 21.

The show is described as a “light-hearted and varied look at the life and character of Charles Dickens.” Gerald Dickens employs scenes from the author’s works, diary extracts and observations from those who knew and worked with him, to bring his great-great grandfather’s persona alive on stage.

Gerald Dickens has been performing one-man shows since 1993. His first show was a rendition of “A Christmas Carol.” He regularly performs in major theatres and arts centers, as well as hotels and stately homes.

Last week’s show was packed with East Meadow community members, as audience members were reminded why Dickens’ work has withstood the test of time.
