East Meadow stockpiles points in fast start

East Meadow has sure lived up to its advanced billing as the No. 2 seed in Nassau Conference I football during the first three games of 2011.

The Jets (3-0) earned their third straight victory in record-setting fashion, knocking off Valley Stream Central, 61-7, to the delight of last Saturday’s Homecoming Day crowd. The 61 points represent the highest under head coach Vin Mascia and the most since 1996 when East Meadow hit the 63-point mark twice. And the 152 total points through the first three games easily broke the program record of 130 set back in 1967.

“The key is we’re not making mistakes, we’re not getting penalized and we’re not turning the ball over,” Mascia said of his team, which led the Eagles 27-0 after the opening quarter. “Our assistant coaches are preparing the guys well and they’re working hard.”

Big plays were the order of the day against the Eagles on both side of the ball. The Jets scored six offensive touchdowns on plays of at least 20 yards, and senior Robbie Healy chipped in a 22-yard interception return on defense. Senior quarterback Dylan Curry threw two passes in the game and completed them both for touchdowns. He connected with Healy on a 72-yard pass and senior Marvin Cajoles on a 57-yard throw as part of the big first quarter.

“He had nine games of experience last year and he’s a totally different kid,” Mascia said of Curry, whose two scoring tosses came on play-action passes. “We’ve got three guys we really trust [at wide receiver]. We believe that anytime [defenses] cheat and give us something [through the air] we’re going to take it.”
