The East Meadow Fire Department received a call at 10:46 p.m. on Dec. 22 with a report of “smoke in the house” at 2444 Second Street in East Meadow.

Volunteers were called to respond, and both ladder companies and engines were on the road within five minutes.

Firefighters located a small fire consuming the heat system under a staircase, according to reports. “Within minutes all visible fire was knocked down as second Ladder company teams quickly opened walls to the stairs and second floor to get ahead of any hidden fire,” said the EMFD.

More than 60 EMFD volunteers responded to the fire, as well as Levittown, Hicksville, North Bellmore and Wantagh fire departments.

No injuries were reported, but the homeowners sustained approximately $15,000 in fire, smoke and water damage.
