East Meadow firefighters rushed to North Jerusalem Road last Friday to battle a house fire that erupted in a kitchen inside an adult group home near the intersection with Bellmore Road.

The department got the call shortly after 9 p.m., said volunteer John O’Brien Sr., and Engine 612 arrived on the scene first, “to find a smoke condition pouring from the two-story residence.”

Firefighters quickly contained the fire before it could spread to other rooms, and ensured all occupants were out of the building. Within 10 minutes, all visible fire was knocked down.

Fifty firefighters responded. Mutual aid was supplied by the Levittown, North Bellmore, North Merrick and Wantagh fire departments. The cause of the blaze is in the hands of the Nassau County Fire Marshal’s Office, O’Brien said.

Although the fire was confined to the kitchen area, O’Brien said damage estimates could reach $30,000 due to the smoke and heat damage in adjoining rooms.
