As Time Goes By

Body Mapping
The exhibit commemorates the opening of the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine at Hofstra University. Works by contemporary artists, Tina Blondell, Giedre Montvila, K.C. (Kaethe) Kauffman, and Eileen Senner are featured, whose imagery deals with marking the human body. Each artist draws upon cultural and societal issues of body image and incorporates traditions such as Mehndi and ta moko practices of superimposing interlacing spiral markings on painted portraits in their work. Edward Weston: Life Work
The exhibit surveys the 50-year career of a giant of 20th-century photography. The photographs of Edward Weston (1886-1958) capture the rhythms, patterns, and interconnections between nature and human experience. Weston’s photographs are renowned for their sensuous print quality and for the rich black and white scale the photographer achieved during printing. Through July 24. Long Island Arts Council At Freeport’s Annual Juried Photography Show

Pictures Of Resistance: The Wartime Photographs of Jewish Partisan Faye Schulman

Richard Avedon: Photographer of Influence
A retrospective of the career of photographer Richard Avedon, who worked in New York from the 1950s through to the 21st century. Highly regarded for revolutionizing the genre of portraiture, Avedon created some of the most iconic works of the 20th century. He is known for his depictions of politicians, artists, models, and Hollywood stars, among them Audrey Hepburn, Bob Dylan, Marilyn Monroe, and Andy Warhol. Through Sept. 4. Robert Hite: Imagined Histories
Sculptures sited among Hudson Valley landscapes are seen in this exhibit. Hite is a sculptor, painter and photographer whose work reflects nature and the surrounding landscape. From 2006 to 2010, he installed and photographed a series of mixed/media architectural sculptures called Imagine Histories: Hudson Valley Landscapes. The exhibition includes a sculpture and black and white photographs from the series. Through Sept. 4. Village Art Club Meeting

Fly First & Fight Afterward: The Life of Col. Clarence D. Chamberlin
A documentary film profiling the life of forgotten aviation pioneer, Col. Clarence D. Photo Competition
The Long Island Center of Photography is sponsoring its fifth annual photo competition. The competition is open to all photographers and includes all types of photography from traditional to new media. All photographers, amateur and professional, are invited to submit their most current work for consideration. Entries will be judged by R. Wayne Parsons, President of the Soho Photo Gallery in Manhattan and regular photography critic of the New York Photo Review. Winning photos will be exhibited at the African American Museum in Hempstead. Awards and prizes will be presented at an artist’s reception on Sept. 25. New York Dance Theatre
New York Dance Theatre seeks ballet students to fill the children’s roles in the 2011 production of “The Nutcracker” to be presented at Hofstra University.
