Gonsalves, CCE deliver produce to families in need

Legislator partners with Cornell Cooperative Extension for program

County Legislator Norma Gonsalves has joined with the master gardeners of Cornell Cooperative Extensions’ Horticultural programs based in Eisenhower Park to invite residents to help donate fresh produce for Nassau families in need.

Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) has devoted nine of its gardens this growing season to educational vegetable gardens. Cornell will be donating the vegetables to the INN in Hempstead for use in its soup kitchen.

“So far we have grown and donated over 300 hundred pounds of produce. We are inviting the residents of Nassau County to bring vegetables from their home gardens to Eisenhower Park for inclusion with the produce we are donating,” said Nancy Youngfert, president of the CCE Board of Directors.
If you’ve grown a garden, and want to contribute what might seem like a small amount to you, please bring it to Eisenhower Park to the CCE gardens and their master gardeners will include it with our delivery over to the INN. Produce can be dropped off on Wednesdays until the end of October between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., and Cornell will deliver it to the INN in Hempstead that day.

“Many of us have backyard gardens and simply can’t eat all of the vegetables we grow," Gonsalves said. "This program gives us the opportunity to share our extra produce with people who need it the most.”

To donate, please bring your produce to the greenhouses located behind the Administration Building in Eisenhower Park.
