The U.S. News & World Report magazine has released its annual ranking of the country’s high schools, which assesses schools on how well they serve all students and how successfully they are educating across a variety of measurable academic outcomes.

East Meadow High School ranked 157 out of more than 1,000 high schools reviewed statewide, and ranked 1,663 nationwide. W.T. Clarke High School ranked 102 in New York State, and 960 nationwide. As a result, both schools have received Silver Medal status from the publication.

Rankings are based on the latest data available to the College Board from the 2012-13 school year. Both East Meadow and Clarke ranked above the state average in terms of college readiness and proficiency in math and English.

East Meadow had a 34 percent participation rate in AP examinations with 79 percent of students scoring a grade of 3 or higher on their exams. Clarke had a 48 percent participation rate in AP examinations and a rate of 79 percent of students scoring a grade of 3 or higher on exams. A grade of 3 or higher on an AP exam indicates that the student is achieving at or above college level.

“I commend our high school building principals and faculties on their commitment to maintaining a culture and tradition of academic excellence in our high schools,” said Superintendent Louis DeAngelo. “And on their preparation of our students for college and career readiness.”
