Teen shot outside Five Towns Community Center was a Lawrence High School student

The body of 17-year-old Harold B. Sermeno, of Far Rockaway, was found outside the Five Towns Community Center on Lawrence Avenue in Lawrence at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, with multiple gunshot wounds, Nassau County Police Department Lt. Richard Lebrun said. The shooting occurred late Monday night, but Lebrun could not confirm if it was gang-related.

Earlier in the day, police checked Lawrence High School records, according to District Superintendent Dr. Ann Pedersen, who noted he was a suspended student being home-schooled at the center.

Center programs were canceled Tuesday and Wednesday, and then  ran as scheduled in the morning and afternoon on Thursday, center officials said.

"As a representative on the Police Commissioners Community Council, we have a direct line of communication with the Commissioner and I have been in contact since early [Tuesday], "Sasha Young posted on the Inwood/Lawrence Community page. "While limited information can be shared at this time due to the ongoing investigation please know that patrol has been stepped up at the center as well as the schools and surrounding areas. The homicide investigation is continuing. Police are asking anyone with information to call Crimestoppers at  (800) 244-8477.
