Jets continue to pound opponents

If East Meadow senior Robbie Healy is looking to narrow down a selection for a college major, perhaps astronomy should make the final cut.

The Jets running back has proven to be amazing in space and plays the game of football at a speed lightyears ahead of everyone else. On top of a momentum changing 81-yard kick return in the first quarter of last Thursday’s 41-6 victory over Oceanside, Healy scored on runs of 26 and 2 yards and added a 65-yard touchdown reception. He’s now scored 16 touchdowns in five games despite playing just 13 total quarters.

“He’s a special player,” Jets head coach Vin Mascia said. “There are plays we draw up that would be good for 20 yards and he ends up taking them all the way.”

Of all the plays Healy made, and he had plenty, including a 64-yard run in the fourth quarter as part of his 11-carry, 159-yard rushing effort, none stands out more than the kick-return touchdown less than two minutes into the game. The Sailors had just completed a six-play, 60-yard touchdown drive in the game’s first 90 seconds to take a six-point lead. Oceanside senior quarterback John Grassi capped the scoring drive by lofting a perfectly thrown ball to senior Philip Ragona for a 34-yard touchdown.

“You’ve got to get out and make sure you’re up on them by a score or two,” Sailors head coach Rob Blount said of the importance of scoring first. “When you get behind, that’s when you can start reeling.”

The kick-return touchdown by started a run of 41 consecutive points for East Meadow (5-0) and a host of big plays on both sides of the field. Oceanside also managed to put together several drives deep into Jets territory but penalties and turnovers kept the Sailors (2-3) off the scoreboard.
