The East Meadow High School football team was surprised with two school signs for winning the Nassau County Championship game during the 2011 season.

Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray entered the Jets’ gym on Feb. 16 and congratulated the young men on their successful season. “This was one of the most exciting high school football season’s in recent memory and East Meadow prevailed in the always tough and competitive Conference One,” she said. “Along with all of the players, congratulations must be extended to a dedicated coaching staff, led by Head Coach Vinny Mascia. This was a season everyone in the school and the community can be immensely proud of.”

Councilman Gary Hudes was unable to attend the presentation, but congratulated Jet’s running back Robbie Healy, who previously won the prestigious Thorp Award as the county’s best player, and was honored with his name on one of the two signs.

“Among the roster of talented players, running back Robbie Healy was truly heroic last season,” said Hudes. “He was a worthy recipient of the Thorp Award presented to the county’s top player and our township welcomes the opportunity to honor one of the greatest seasons ever turned in by a high school player.”

Healy said he was surprised to have his name on a sign, but thankful for the honor. He credited his teammates and coaches with their success. Healy started playing football at five years old and said, “I just love the dedication that goes into it, all the hard work, especially when it pays off like it did this year. It’s a great feeling.”

Healy verbally committed to East Stroudsburg University in Pennsylvania where he will continue to play football.
