Jets make Homecoming a blast

Posted
East Meadow celebrated Homecoming with touchdowns on six of its seven first-half drives and cruised to a 49-0 victory over Port Washington last Saturday. The Conference I win, the Jets second in three games, was secure by halftime, as the starting unit only worked a half day but still managed to put in a full day’s worth of production.

East Meadow’s defense dominated the point of attack from the opening series, allowing the Vikings to to rack up just 13 yards of offense on eight first-half drives. “The defense set the tone of the game,” Jets coach Vin Mascia said. “They were all over [Port Washington]. I’m very happy about that.”

By the time the Vikings knew what was happening, the game was already out of reach. Their first series resulted in minus-14 yards thanks to a fumbled pitch, and the first five series were all over after three plays. Port Washington managed just one completion on eight pass attempts in the half, and the connection was stopped behind the line of scrimmage for a 4-yard loss.

The Jets, meanwhile, were busy making good use of their plays. Their first offensive snap was a 25-yard completion from senior quarterback Lou Buschi to junior Sean Hinchy, who was lined up as a slot receiver. Senior running back Steven Katz scored on a five-yard run on the next play. Buschi turned in his most efficient game to date, mixing in a perfect blend of big plays through the air and on the ground. He completed 3 of 5 passes for 68 yards and added 75 yards rushing on just five attempts.

“He threw well and ran the option well,” Mascia said. “He was effective in his reads. [Port Washington] said he was going to be the guy to beat them, and [Buschi] took what they gave him.”

The offense as a whole had little trouble stringing together yardage. Buschi capped a six-play drive in the first quarter on an 8-yard option run and needed just one play to increase the lead to 21-0 early in the second. After a 16-yard punt gave East Meadow great field position at the Port Washington 27, Buschi connected with Katz on a 27-yard touchdown. Katz’s third touchdown, a 40 yard run, finished off a two-play, 64-yard drive.

Senior running back Robert Bright added scoring runs of 30 and 62 yards in the second quarter among his five carries, and senior Jon Amaya closed out the end zone assault with a nine-yard touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter.

East Meadow hosts No. 2 Farmingdale (2-1) at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, in a key battle that could shape how the rest of the campaign shakes out. “Whoever wins is going to put themselves in good position for the future,” Mascia said.
