The Bowling Green K-Kids took to the Wantagh Park boat launch ramp early last Saturday to distribute safety brochures in honor of their fellow K-Kid Harlie Treanor. Treanor, 11, was among three children who were tragically killed on July 4 when the Kandi Won, a 34-foot cabin cruiser, capsized in Oyster Bay.

Thunderstorms tore through the island on July 28, which postponed the event, but a sunny day arrived on Aug. 4 and the kids smiled just as bright as they honored the friend they recently lost.

K-Kids said many boaters eagerly accepted the brochures and offered their condolences to the K-Kids.

“We simply want to help reduce the chance that a boating accident will cause others to endure the sadness and loss that we feel over Harlie’s death,” said Rich Santer, the Bowling Green K-Kids advisor.

“In addition, this project has taught the K-Kid members the power of turning grief into positive action,” he said.

The K-Kids also expressed their appreciation to boating safety instructor and East Meadow Kiwanian Alan Alterman who supplied the brochures. They also thanked Kiwanis Advisor Legislator Norma Gonsalves and Kiwanian Liz Fries who helped secure Nassau County approval for their safety project.

Additional Kiwanis Clubs were also on hand to assist including the W.T. Clark Builders Club, Division 6 Key Club and LIU-Post Circle K members on the Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Center’s Service Leadership Committee.
