Local programs canceled due to storm

The Town of Hempstead and the East Meadow School District have canceled several programs due to this weekend's snowstorm.

The storm hit the area late Friday night and became fierce throughout Saturday. Initial estimates from the National Weather Service are calling for six to 12 inches of snow to fall, though Saturday morning forecasters said higher amounts would accumulate.

Leon Campo, the superintendent of the East Meadow School District, sent a message to parents on Friday to let them know that all East Meadow school-related activities have been cancelled. This includes the SAT exams that were scheduled for Saturday; Campo said the College Board will provide an alternative exam date, which district officials will share with all concerned.

Campo also advised local families to be cautious during the blizzard. "I urge parents to instruct their children as to the dangers which may accompany this major snow event," he said. "Please stay safe and warm."

Hempstead Town cancelled several programs across the region as well. The cancellations were announced on the town website.

Registration for "Shape-up for Men" Sunday classes has been postponed to Sunday, Jan. 31 at 8:30 a.m. — just before the first class begins. "Shape-Up for Men" Wednesday class participants will register on Wednesday, Feb. 3 at 6 p.m.

ANCHOR registration, which was originally scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 23,  has been rescheduled to Friday, Jan. 22 (from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. in the Malone-Mulhull Recreation Center at Camp ANCHOR). The ANCHOR dance slated for Friday evening will proceed as scheduled. ANCHOR's regular Saturday program scheduled for Jan. 23 at the Rosemary Kennedy Center has been cancelled.

The Civil Service exams scheduled to be held on Saturday have been cancelled due to the impending  storm. All participants will be notified by mail of the date the examinations will be rescheduled.

The Town-Village Aircraft Safety and Noise Abatement Committee scheduled to be held on Monday, Jan. 25, has also been cancelled. The next regular meeting will take place on Monday, Feb. 22 at 7:30 p.m. in the Nathan L.H. Bennett Pavilion, Hempstead Town Hall, located at 1 Washington St. in Hempstead.

Not all local programs have been cancelled, however. Temple Emanu-El's Snowflake Shabbat will go on as planned on Friday. The program begins at the temple, at 123 Merrick Ave., at 7 p.m.

East Meadow Library officials said any and all program cancellations will be listed on their website, eastmeadow.info.
