East Meadow resident Andrew Alderman was recently honored by the Town of Hempstead as one of 12 “extraordinary community members” during its 17th Annual Make A Difference Awards Ceremony on Nov. 12 at Hempstead Town Hall.

Alderman was recognized for his commitment to fundraising and participation in the annual Lupus Awareness Walk at Eisenhower Park. He has raised thousands of dollars to the cause, dating back to his early years of volunteerism.

He has also advocated for breast cancer, pancreatic cancer, down syndrome and autism awareness, as well as the Wounded Warriors Project. Earlier this year, Alderman — a former Herald Person of the Year — gathered supplies and raised money for victims displaced by an apartment complex fire.

“Like all of us, Andrew was not born a leader,” said Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray. “However, unlike many of us, he has made himself into a true leader in the areas of volunteerism and community involvement.”
