The East Meadow Fire Department led the response for a house fire at Crabtree Lane in Levittown on Friday morning.

Firefighters rushed to the two-story home, which was enveloped in flames, at about 9:47 a.m.

A woman on the scene, who identified herself as the homeowner, said that her adult son, a college student, escaped by jumping out the window of his second-floor bedroom. The man was transported to the Nassau University Medical Center to be treated for injuries to his back, she said.

The fire began on the first floor and spread upstairs. Crews worked on the scene throughout the morning. According to EMFD 1st Assistant Chief Carl Pugliese, the fire was deemed under control at about 10:45 a.m.

“It was just a good bread and butter operation,” Pugliese said. “Even though there is a lot of damage, the guys did a really good job.”

Members of the Nassau County Fire Marshal’s Office were on the scene to investigate a cause of the incident.

Mutual aid was provided by the Hicksville, Levittown and North Bellmore Fire Departments.

No firefighters were injured.

The chief commended his ladder teams for paving the way toward knocking down the fast-moving flames.

“What happens is a lot of these fires start on one floor and travel and get into the void spaces,” Pugliese said. “A lot of hard ladder work was done, so I have to commend the guys on the ladder teams.”
