McVey students take the stage

Posted

On March 31, students in Carrie Gellman-Trigg’s and Jessica Klide’s first-grade ESL (English as a Second Language) class at McVey Elementary School participated in a Reader’s Theater play, entitled “The Adventures of the Three Witches.”

The students’ parents were invited as guests to view the play. It was a great opportunity for parents to connect to their children’s learning and see the hard work and preparation they had put forth. Reader’s Theater was introduced to McVey’s ESL class by Response to Intervention Coordinator Rita Wirth. It supports fluency, confidence, and enthusiasm in reading, which was certainly displayed through the first-grade students’ wonderful and animated performance.

The students began the Reader’s Theater process by reading a variety of fairy tales. After role-playing and reading several stories, the students used “Goldilocks and the Three Bears” to develop a fractured fairy tale. The students wrote their own scripts, and chose different characters, settings, and events for the story. They worked extremely hard to write an interesting fairy tale, and it definitely showed through the performance.
