Merrick’s 12-year-old Williamsport softball team, a.k.a. the "Merrick Madness," has won the New York State Softball Championship, defeating Garden City South 13-6 in Canastota, N.Y. on July 28, according to Bill Haddad, president of the Canastota Little League. Congratulations, girls! More to follow.

2010 marks the fifth year that a softball team from Merrick has participated in the Williamsport tournament, and in that time, Merrick squads have won three district championships, three Long Island championships and two New York State championships.

The Merrick Madness will now head to Albany, where the team will represent New York as one of 11 states in the East Coast Region Tournament of Champions from July 31–Aug. 8. This is the first time that a Merrick softball team has advanced to the regionals.
