News from the East Meadow Chamber of Commerce

Posted

Although this term ends in January, East Meadow Chamber of Commerce President Dr. Janine Kelly and her officers are actively pursuing several initiatives within the community:

Beautification efforts

The American flags hanging on utility poles along East Meadow Avenue have become old and worn out. Some are even wrapped around the wires. Kelly said the Chamber seek to take the flags down for proper burial, and replace them as it plans to hang banners for the holidays.

But the problem is not finding volunteers to take down the flags — there are Chamber members willing to do so  — the issue is getting up to the wires. So far, the Chamber has been unsuccessful in attaining a bucket truck and a sign company, and is reaching out to the community for assistance.

The flag initiative is one of many beautification efforts led by the Chamber, which over the years has also spearheaded extensive improvements in the Town Square at Veterans Memorial Park.

Also, while the Town of Hempstead plans to replace two signs, the Chamber also plans to install a new, modernized “Welcome to East Meadow” sign on Hempstead Turnpike just past the ramp from the Meadowbrook Parkway.

An informational hub

In order to spread the word on organizational activities and community events, Kelly said the Chamber is working on installing kiosks in areas of the community. These kiosks would serve as informational boards, providing residents with useful information. The Chamber aims to open kiosks in popular areas like Town Square and the Nassau University Medical Center.

Board elections at next meeting

The next monthly meeting of the Chamber will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 4 at 6:30 p.m. at the firehouse on 590 East Meadow Avenue, across from Figarelly’s Deli. Members are urged to attend, as elections for the Board of Directors will be conducted.

Upcoming events

The annual holiday tree and menorah lighting, sponsored by the Chamber, is scheduled for Dec. 3 at 6 p.m. in Town Square. On Dec. 7, at 6:30 p.m., Borrelli’s will be the site for the Chamber’s holiday party.

The Chamber has also scheduled its annual installation dinner for Jan. 29 at Fox Hollow in Woodbury. New officers and board members will be installed, including incoming President Rose Fuger. Tickets have not yet been released.
