Nighttime travel lane closures of Front Street/NY Route 102 now underway in the Town of Hempstead, Nassau County

Posted

For the protection of motorists, closure of all eastbound travel lanes on Front Street/NY Route 102 between William Street in Hempstead Village and NY Route 24/Hempstead Turnpike in East Meadow in the Town of Hempstead, are now in effect and will continue each weekday night for approximately three weeks, weather permitting. Eastbound travel lanes are being closed between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday and no on-street parking is permitted. Violators will be towed. To minimize the impact on traffic, westbound travel lanes remain open to motorists.

These travel lane closures are needed to repair the worn pavement of this heavily traveled section of state roadway. The top layer of the worn, distressed pavement will be removed then replaced with new asphalt pavement and fresh markings. When completed, these pavement improvements will help prolong the integrity of this section of roadway. As with any roadway project, this operation is weather dependent and may be canceled, postponed or prolonged due to inclement weather. Local officials and emergency service providers have been notified about the nighttime travel lane closures.

Motorists are being warned in advance of the closing via electronic roadway message signs; however, motorists are urged to use alternate routes to avoid delays. In addition, motorists are reminded to drive carefully through the work zone, follow the instructions from the flag person and obey the posted construction speed limit for their safety as well as the safety of the highway work crew. For 24/7 up-to-date traffic and travel information, motorists should call 511 or visit www.511NY.org. Motorists may also obtain travel information from the INFORM Transportation Management Center cameras at www.INFORMNY.com and on their hand held communication devices at www.INFORMNY.mobi.

Motorists are reminded that fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone. In accordance with the Work Zone Safety Act, convictions of two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of an individual’s driver’s license.

The New York State Department of Transportation appreciates the patience and cooperation of motorists and the local communities while this preventive maintenance repair is undertaken to help assure the continued protection of all motorists.
