Operation: Tectonic Fury at Bowling Green

Class analyzes planet’s mysteries

Posted

Debra Berger’s third-grade class at Bowling Green Elementary School is discovering the mysteries of planet Earth. Operation: Tectonic Fury, founded by Dr. Robert Ballard, is a Jason Project’s Education through Exploration program.

Throughout the school year, the class will analyze geologic evidence from around the world and hypothesize what happened millions of years ago to the planet. For several months, the class has studied the mid-ocean ridge where scientists have discovered hydrothermal vents.

This information explains the concept of how continents move, why earthquakes occur, and how volcanoes erupt. Building upon the geologic concepts, the students will learn about glaciation, plate tectonics, earthquakes, volcanism, weathering, and erosion for the remainder of the school year.
