Parkway students 'Leaf Through a Good Book'

Posted

The library at Parkway Elementary School has begun a new program for students in grades one through five, called “Leaf Through a Good Book.” The project is designed to encourage students to read.

First-grade teacher Stephanie Streek, left, her students and Parkway Librarian Jennifer Reed recognized the class for earning the most leaves for the month of February.

Once a student completes a book, they fill out a slip of paper and briefly summarize the book they read the week before. The book can be from the school library, public library, their home, or their classroom. The program also encourages the students to return and check out new books each time they visit the library.

Each week, leaves fill up the tree as classes fill out their summaries. At the end of the month, the class that has the most leaves on its tree wins a certificate and is declared over the morning announcements. The class that has the most certificates wins an ice cream party at the end of year. The tree in the library is blossoming with leaves just in time for spring.
