Providing a meal to those in need

Members of the East Meadow Kiwanis Club, joined by local students, spent last Friday evening assembling Thanksgiving food baskets in the W.T. Clarke High School cafeteria, which they delivered to 114 families in the local community the following morning.

Money and food were raised by Kiwanis members, and students in local Kiwanis-sponsored Key Club, Builders Club and K-Kids Club, and by shoppers who donated during the club’s food drive outside of Waldbaums the previous two weekends.

Kiwanis members deliver the food to families in the community who have recently fallen upon hard times, and otherwise may not be able to afford a full Thanksgiving dinner. Led by chairpersons Alan Hodish, Jay Steinmetz and Steve Perrick, about 35 cars full of Kiwanis members personally hand-delivered the food to the families on Saturday morning.

“It’s a fun event,” said Perrick, who has co-chaired the event for 15 years. “It’s what makes me want to do Kiwanis. It’s something I never want to miss.
