After a seven-month hiatus, Shogun has re-opened for business. Ownership is the same, while management is new. Renovations have enhanced the décor, and Asian fusion dishes have been added to what was formerly limited to a traditional Japanese hibachi and sushi menu.

The restaurant is run by a personable and experienced husband and wife team. Sachi mans the kitchen and sushi bar, sending out magnificent presentations with unique homemade sauces. Zen cordially greets and helps serve the clientele. Their hibachi chefs are outstanding performers, dazzling guests with humor and scrumptious productions. Décor is Asian contemporary, with colorful Japanese murals and artifacts abound.

Favorite menu items prevail, complementing delicious new ones from Thailand, Malaysia, China and Japan. Appetizers are $4 to $10. Soups and salads are $2 to $9. Warm kitchen entrees range from $7 to $16. Sushi bar entrees, which include soup or salad, are $12 to $50, the latter price for two. Sushi rolls are $3 to $16. Hibachi dinner entrees, which come with a shrimp appetizer, vegetables, chicken corn soup, salad and rice, are $13 to $32. Children’s hibachi dinners are $10 to $17.

Warm sake, followed by hot tea, was a cozy opener. Tuna tartare was sensational — raw tuna on fresh greens drizzled with wasabi yuzu sauce, served over warm crunchy rice. Black cod glazed in saikya miso sauce was amazing in flavor. Yellowtail jalapeno was thinly sliced, sprinkled with ponzu sauce, and garnished with peppers, shaved radish and a tiny Japanese plum. Rock shrimp, prepared tempura style, was finished with a luscious spicy sauce. Chicken and beef satay — three skewers of each - came with a savory peanut dipping sauce.

Assorted sashimi arrived looking like a centerpiece. Topping an ice-filled glass bowl accented by lights that changed colors were sweet live scallops, raw tuna, white fish and more, served on greens, garnished with leaves, shells and branches … spectacular. Bobby’s Roll will more than please any sushi aficionado – Asian pear and lobster salad topped with raw tuna. Shogun offers more than 50 different sushi rolls!
