Special election to fill 15th Assembly District seat

Posted

A special election to fill the vacancy in the state's 15th Assembly District will be held on Feb. 9.

The seat was previously held by Rob Walker, a Republican from Hicksville, who left the state Assembly to become deputy county executive under Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano.

The 15th Assembly District includes East Meadow, Salisbury, among other areas on the North Shore and in Central Nassau County. Governor David Paterson called for special elections, also to be held in other assembly districts within Suffolk, Westchester and Queens.

A Republican source said a candidate has not been chosen yet, but an announcement could be made within days. Democrats have also not revealed their candidate.

As of press time, no candidates had filed for the election, according to a Nassau County Board of Elections official.

Walker defeated Democratic candidate Stephanie Ovadia, of East Meadow, during the 2008 elections. Ovadia told the Herald on Monday that she is not running for the seat.
