The life and times of Jefferson

Fourth and fifth-grade students at Meadowbrook Elementary School were treated to a special assembly about the life and times of Thomas Jefferson, our nation’s third president and author of the Declaration of Independence.

Storyteller Jonathan Kruk presented a brief history, facts, and anecdotes about Thomas Jefferson’s life while dressed in clothing of that period. He invited students to the stage to learn how to bow and curtsy, which was how people greeted each other in that era, and taught them a special Shoshone (Native American) greeting. The Meadowbrook PTA sponsored this assembly.

Spelling champions

Fifth-grade students at Bowling Green Elementary School participated in their annual spelling bee on Jan. 6.

Each fifth-grade class sent two class champions to the school contest. The competition, under the direction of reading teachers Ellen Kelter and Jennie Re, was fierce as the students competed for the title of “Grade Five Spelling Bee Champion.”

Bowling Green’s 2011 runner-up was Thalia Stogianos from Jennifer Abshire’s class.

The fifth-grade spelling bee champion, who spelled the winning word “costume,” was Michelle Giacobello from Richard Santer’s class.

Snow day

The East Meadow School District closed school on Wednesday, Jan. 12 because of the winter storm that swept through the area overnight.

With a winter storm warning in effect and snow already falling on Tuesday night, Jan. 11, school officials made the call early. Parents began receiving calls and emails about the closure at around 9 p.m.

School was back in session on Thursday, Jan. 13.
