W.T. Clarke High School and Middle School students joined together to put on two memorable performances of the musical “Annie” on March 2 and 3.

For the first time, Director Douglas Castillo and Technical Director Anthony Duffy, who both teach at Woodland Middle School, were faced with the challenge of developing a musical that highlighted talented middle and high school students. The results received positive feedback. “It was a wonderful turnout and everyone seemed to enjoy it,” said Castillo.

The students practiced for two months as needed with some participants attending rehearsal Monday to Friday and some Saturdays.

Choosing a musical that was appropriate for 11 to 18-year-old students with a range of experience proved challenging, but “Annie” was a perfect fit as middle schoolers played orphans and high schoolers were placed in adult roles.

On the day of the performance, 48 student actors graced the stage, 18 high school students performed in the orchestra pit and 15 students were involved in stage crew.

This musical would not have been possible without teacher involvement, which also included Vocal Director Robin Hall, Choreographer Mary Landry and David Fletcher, who faced duel roles as pit conductor and musical director.
