Where in the world is Barnum Woods?

Geography comes to life at East Meadow elementary school

Posted

Third-graders at Barnum Woods Elementary School in East Meadow had a chance to walk across the globe last week.

Well, the world was actually in the form of a National Geographic Giant Floor Map inside one of Barnum Woods' gymnasiums. The students got to jump from continent to continent as instructors from Nassau BOCES gave an interactive geography lesson on April 14.

The BOCES Outdoor and Environmental Education program offers students firsthand experiences. For more information on BOCES programs, visit www.nassauboces.org.

BOCES educators Kathy Frost and Anne Johnson led the students on an exploration of the various landforms and areas of the world, while also using map keys that provided additional information on particular nations, continents, oceans, etc.

While getting an important lesson to culminate the geography unit, the students also enjoyed educational games that incorporated old favorites like "Simon Says" and relay races.

Teacher Jennifer Clampitt, whose class participated in the exercise, was pleased with the lesson.

"It was a reinforcement of what we learned in class," she said. "It makes it come to life."
