Thursday was dig-out day throughout the South Shore after a near-blizzard smacked the area from late Tuesday through early Thursday morning. Almost a foot and a half of heavy, wet snow pressed down on roofs, cars, streets and parks, closing schools for most students and bringing shoveling chores to most adults. Nassau County Police Commissioner Lawrence W. Mulvey has announced that for the thirty one hour period from 12:01 a.m. Feb. 10, through 7 a.m. Feb. 11, there were 190 auto accidents in the Nassau County. Of those, 34 resulted in injuries. more

The Rhame Avenue Elementary School Class of 1963 was a post World War II melting pot, and many were first-generation Americans. Most of our parents had moved to East Rockaway from Brooklyn and other city boroughs after the war. more
The Lynbrook Council of PTA’s sponsored its annual Staff Volleyball Game and Middle School Kickline performance recently. Funds raised from the event will go toward scholarship funds for graduatin Lynbrook High School seniors. more
The East Rockaway Fire Department was called to a fire in progress at 200 Main Street Wednesday night. The three residents, one of whom called in the fire, were waiting outside of their home, all safe, when firemen arrived. The firefighters did, however, rescue a mother cat and her three kittens from the second floor of the home. The blaze started on the first floor, according to Chief Ed Reicheter, and quickly travelled to the second floor. Video courtesy Mark Kasner more
