Residents were told to stay in their homes and holiday rush-hour traffic was redirected away from a four-block area around Davison Court in East Rockaway at 4 p.m. last Friday by a Nassau County Bureau of Special Operations unit along with dozens of police officers.

With school back in session, many are concerned that another outbreak of the H1N1 virus, commonly known as swine flu, is just around the corner. An outbreak in the New York area in the spring spread fear about this new, unknown disease. Many parents kept their children home from school when cases were confirmed, leading to high absentee rates. Some schools closed entirely.

Millions of iPhones and BlackBerrys are being used every second, and few adults in Nassau County are without a cell phone of some kind. These devices enable more than phone calls. We can type text messages, read e-mails, connect to the Internet and type Twitter messages and Facebook updates. We can find out where the nearest pizzeria, gas station or hospital is. We can check the weather. We can get a movie review, find the closest theater where that movie is playing and when the next show starts, and then get directions to the theater. All on the phone.
