More than a dozen local residents gathered outside the district office of State Sen. Jack Martins (R-Mineola) in Garden City Park on Feb. 17 to show their support for a ban on hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking,” in the extraction of natural gas. more

Nearly 100 local residents, including several county legislators, rallied on Monday at the Nassau County Legislative Chambers in Mineola, protesting a plan by County Executive Ed Mangano to transform four of the county’s eight police precincts, including the 5th, into “community policing centers.” Six days earlier, dozens of people had rallied against the plan at the 5th Precinct building in Elmont. Mangano said that the plan, which was announced on Jan. 30, would save the county $20 million per year. The proposal diverged from his announcement in October that two precincts would be closed and the boundaries of the remaining six realigned. more

Nearly 50 local residents rallied in Elmont on Jan. 31 against proposed new state Senate district maps that would move a southern portion of Elmont from District 7 to District 9. According to protesters, the maps are meant to disenfranchise voters, not empower them. more

In a move celebrated by state school officials, a law was passed over the summer to help school districts cut bus costs and put those savings toward school programs, and local districts have just recently been able to take advantage of it. more

Hundreds of local residents attended the “Athletic, Health and Fitness Clinic,” a free fitness clinic held on Oct. 15, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Valencia Gym in Elmont. The clinic — hosted by Sen. Jack M. Martins (R-Mineola) — is expected to be an annual event for all ages. more

After the 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament’s record-breaking turnout of more than 4,500 on July 16, the Elmont community couldn’t have been prouder. The tournament is held annually for fifth-grade to college students. more

At a meeting last month, representatives of the Shinnecock Indian Nation and Elmont’s Coalition for Sustainable Development produced a conceptual development plan for a casino at Belmont Park, which includes a 400- to 600-room hotel, a gaming facility and entertainment complex with restaurants, a renovated Long Island Rail Road station and a soccer field. more
