Hempstead Town bans cell towers near homes

At a Town Hall meeting on Tuesday morning, the Town of Hempstead passed legislation that regulates where cell antennas and other wireless telecommunications equipment may be placed within the township. more

Merokean Liz O’Shaughnessy created her own nonprofit corporation, CoLoKi Inc., to take over the Freeport Trailer Hiring Site for day laborers from Catholic Charities this past year. The trailer was in jeopardy of closing for good because of low attendance.

Where day laborers get their fair shake

Merokean Liz O’Shaughnessy swung by the cement-gray trailer at the east end of Bennington Avenue in Freeport in November 2008. “The place was packed,” recalled O’Shaughnessy of the facility, squeezed between a window factory and a truck yard, which gives immigrant day laborers a safe place to wait for landscapers and contractors to pick them up for jobs. more
