After the State Senate’s vote on Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s budget in March, the Sewanhaka, Franklin Square and Elmont school districts were handed new numbers for budget consideration — numbers that were considerably more favorable to local districts but did not eliminate their budget woes.

For the second time in the past two months, parents came to the microphone at the Sewanhaka High School District’s Board of Education meeting to publicly disparage the district’s English as a Second Language program. The program is currently housed in only one school within the five-school district — the H. Frank Carey High School — and some parents within the district believe it has created an unsafe environment at Carey.

"Boy Meets World” was a great show.
Seriously, I looked forward to it every week. ABC’s T.G.I.F. lineup on Friday nights was awesome.
“Boy Meets World” was my favorite of those Friday night shows. One character in particular was special to me — and to most people in my age group — and that was Mr. Feeny.

Elmont natives Bill and Jim Germanakos, the fourth-season champions of NBC’s popular prime-time show “The Biggest Loser,” just keep on winning. Bill, who was declared the winner and received $250,000, and Jim — who was eliminated early in the competition but won first prize among the eliminated contestants and was awarded $100,000 — have managed to maintain both healthy lifestyles and successful careers.

Elmont native Cara Castronuova, a certified trainer and a two-time Golden Gloves winner who was ranked No. 2 in the country by USA Boxing when she was in her 20s, is one of two new trainers on the hit television show “The Biggest Loser,” which airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. on NBC. The network became interested in casting Castronuova on the show after viewing the History Channel documentary “Warrior Women,” which included a segment on female boxers at the Brooklyn-based Gleason’s Gym, where Castronuova trained.

The Sewanhaka Central High School District held a search meeting on Thursday, March 10, at 7:30 p.m., in the auditorium of the Sewanhaka High School, to gather ideas from district residents about the district’s new superintendent. Warren Meierdiercks, who has been the district’s superintendent for the past five years, announced in December that he will be retiring on June 30, and the district has since been working to find a resident- and administration-approved replacement.
