South Shore elected leaders are calling on the state to upgrade safety measures on Long Island parkways after a charter bus carrying students from Kennedy Airport to Suffolk County recently crashed into the Eagle Avenue bridge in Lakeview, nearly shearing off the bus’s roof and injuring three dozen students and chaperones, six of them seriously.

A bill introduced last Thursday in the State Senate, sponsored by the entire Long Island Senate delegation, would rename a 10-mile stretch of the Southern State Parkway in honor of Malvernite and NYPD Detective Steven McDonald, who died Jan. 10. The bill, which is expected to pass the Senate this session, proposes to rename the parkway the Steven McDonald Memorial Highway.

A treasure trove of original survey maps of the Long Island Motor Parkway — the country’s first road built exclusively for automobiles, in 1908 — have been in the basement of a Malverne business, the Learning Circle, for decades. “I saw them about 20 years ago and I didn’t pay much attention to them,” said Roy Knoernschild, an on-call custodian for the building.
