New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli announced on June 10 that his office completed audits of several school districts statewide, including the Elmont Union Free School District. The audit was initiated by the state nearly one year ago. Auditors found that Elmont’s Board of Education inappropriately delegated the discretionary functions of approving purchase orders, journal entries and wire transfers to its business consultant, Tom Galante. Thus, Galante was responsible for approving all district purchases, including the purchase of his own services. more

This year’s turnout of 7,656 voters was significantly lower than last year, when nearly 10,000 people voted on the current school spending plan. more
The Elmont Union Free School District's 2011-12 budget passed today, after 1,861 voters came out to the polls to share their opinions about the budget. 1,124 residents supported the budget, and 737 residents voted "no." Last year, 1,677 local residents voted in support of Elmont’s 2010-11 budget, and 1,001 residents voted against it. more

Following Sewanhaka Central High School District superintendent Warren Meierdierck’s announcement last December that he would be retiring in June, the district has been working to find a new superintendent to take his place. The district’s Board of Education placed advertisement in The New York Times, held a search meeting in March, and has been receiving leads from a search firm over the past few months. During the Sewanhaka district’s last BOE meeting, on May 3, BOE president Jean Fichtl announced that Dr. Ralph Ferrie will be the district’s new superintendent, beginning July 1. more
