Collect bottle caps; avoid fine payments

Help Hewlett-Woodmere library's Teen committee create a new mural

From July 18 through July 23, the Hewlett-Woodmere Public Library will be accepting plastic bottle caps and lids in lieu of fine payments for overdue items.
For each five caps, lids or combination, the library will deduct 10 cents off the fines. Limit 50 caps ($1) per card, per transaction. No credit toward future fines. Cap exchanges do not apply to fees for lost or damaged books.

The Caps for Cash program will supply the Teen Advisory Committee with materials to create a mosaic mural for the Children’s Room to replace the painted mural that was damaged in Hurricane Sandy.

Alice Rispoli, head of Youth Services, said the teen committee thought of the bottle cap idea for the new mural. “They’ve come up with an outline for the design, and will be working on it during the upcoming school year,” Rispoli said. “We’re looking for plastic caps and lids of all colors and sizes, including caps from milk bottles, butter and margarine tubs, soda bottles — anything that has a cap or cover. We just ask that you wash them well before bringing them in.”
