A great white shark believed to be nearly 26-feet in length and weighing a ton and a half has been spotted off the shore of Atlantic Beach and the East Rockaway inlet the past few days, according to residents.

Capt. Kirby Kurkomelis, a master diver, who lives in Woodmere, said that the shark is known to him and others as “Harry” and has been swimming in local waters for the past 25 years.

“He has no scars and has spent two to three months in this area for many years now,” said Kurkomelis, who thinks the shark swims down from Nantucket after feeding on seals.. “He has been seen at times under the Atlantic Beach Bridge and was once swatted in four-feet of water by a guy near the Cedarhurst Yacht Club.”
