Four Hewlett High School students, along with two fellow seniors from Mesivta Ateres Yaakov Ruth & Hyman High School in Lawrence, and another from Davis Renov Stahler (DRS) Yeshiva High School for Boys in Woodmere were named semifinalists in the 62nd annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

Leo Khazan, Daniel Kostovetsky, Matthew R, Perkins and Nathan V. Roblin from Hewlett High; Samuel Maltz and Nathan Samson from Mesivta Ateres Yaakov and  Evan M. Goldstein from DRS, were among the 16,000 students nationwide who attained this honor. The semifinalists represent less than 1 percent of the total number of U.S. high school seniors.

An estimated 1.6 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2017 program, and were screened based on their 2015 PSAT scores. Semifinalists will move on through the competition to possibly earn one of 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth about $33 million that will be handed out next spring.
