A pair of Five Towns natives die

Edward Rothenstein, 85, and Daisy Leshansky, 76

Edward Rothenstein of Woodmere and Delray Beach, Fl. died on June 24. He was 85 years old.

Rothenstein, the son of Albert and Florence, first lived in New York City then his family moved to Woodmere. He graduated from Hewlett High School and earned both a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Ohio State University.

Upon graduation, Rothenstein served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and then began a career in the electronics industry.

Rothenstein was also very active in community service in Nassau County as he was involved with Five Towns United Way and served on the education committee and various positions at Temple Beth-El in Cedarhurst. In the late 1990s, he and his wife of 61 years, Shirley, retired to Florida.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley, daughters Barbara Budasoff and Julie Morgenstern, sons-in-law Daniel Budasoff and Saul Morgenstern, grandchildren Alana Budasoff Kanzer, Peter Morgenstern, Larry Budasoff and Emily Morgenstern and grandson-in-law Adam Kanzer.

Services were held on June 27 at the Edwards-Dowdle Funeral Home in Dobbs Ferry, NY.

Daisy Leshansky, who owned Max’s Appetizing & Kosher Deli, died on June 28. She was 76.

Leshansky of North Woodmere and Boca Raton, Fla., was born in Berlin, Germany and came to the United States in 1937. She married her husband, Jerome, on Aug. 3, 1949.

An avid tennis player, Leshansky resided in North Woodmere for 35 years and retired to Boca Raton with her husband. She owned the deli located at 1016 Broadway in Woodmere until her death.

Her son, Robert, said his mother was beloved by all. “She was the best mother in the world and was a very devoted grandmother and wife,” he said. “They didn’t come any better than my mother.”

Services were held Sunday at New Montefiore Cemetery in West Babylon and Leshansky was interred there as well.

Leshansky is survived by her husband Jerome, her son Robert, daughter-in-law Meryl, grandsons Adam, Cory, Jeffrey and Michael and granddaughter Jamie.
